Upstage Performs in CAMMA

Last September 1, the University of the Philippines Students’ Theater Arts Guild for Education (Upstage) performed a “dula-tula” in the 16th Cebu Archdiocesan Mass Media Awards (CAMMA) in SM Cinema 1.

The “dula-tula” depicted the importance of responsible usage of social networking sites.

Upstage had a theatrical performance depicting real life situations and events relevant to the society that involves the mass media- such as the canonization of Saint Pedro Calungsod and the declaration of the new pope, Pope Francis.

“We delegated the task to each member of Upstage to think of a relevant issue in our society.” John Rhey Balmori said, current Upstage chairperson.

This year’s CAMMA, the organization also performed Babanam.

CAMMA, held every two years, is considered as a good tool to address issues and concerns about the mass media through art.

“[It serves as a] good promotion for the organization and at the same time gives opportunities for members to showcase their talents to a different crowd.” said last year’s Upstage chairperson and the recent vice-chairperson for high school relations, Bridgette Alcorcon.

The Upstage’s participation also gives awareness to its members of the reality of today. It helps the members to think of what should be done. The Upstage performers and the whole organization, like almost every other performer, felt a lot of pressure before their performances; however the experience and development they gained in the end was all worth it.
