To succeed in life, you have to
“know your goals, know your priorities and know yourself,” Nina Alfeche said.
Niña Kathryn Golez Alfeche, 3rd year Biology
student is a smiling girl but serious and determined about her studies. Some of
her classmates call her as “naning” kid for being serious on her studies,
diligently doing her homeworks and projects.
“She’s friendly, approachable, reliable and
smart,” her classmate Jessa Adonay said.
She is like an ordinary UP
Student who studies to achieve her dreams.
But what makes her student life more challenging is the responsibility
she has in her shoulders.

It all started with a desire to
see change. She said “If I wanna see
change, why not do it yourself?”
She believed she can start seeing
that change by joining the official group who imposes and plans for their
default organization, the University of the Philippines Ecological Society or
UPECS.
“Secretary ra man unta to akong plano. But gi nominate man ko nila as president
so I just grab the opportunity (I just planned to be elected as the
secretary but they nominated me as their president so I just grab the
opportunity),” she explained.
She’s one of the Bio students who
are also known for being early birds compared to other courses in UP Cebu. As
early as 7:30 am, they are already around to attend class. Moreover, aside from
the Fine Arts students, they are also the ones who leave the school very late.
Sometimes, as late as 9 pm, they are still kicking in the four walls of their
laboratory rooms, making their lab experiments, projects and others.
They have also full schedules at
school. This has been their reason why they got lesser time for other
activities outside school.
Most especially to Nina, aside
from attending her studies, she is also bound to perform her duties as the Bio
student’s president. It gave her more
loads of tasks and responsibilities to perform—as a student, a daughter and a
president.
“Ako jud tungaon akong time, if naa koy buhatunon for UPECS, I
always make sure nga mabuhat sa nako nah before
ko magstudy. Dapat mabuhat jud nako akong
tasks for UPECS before going home
para inig uli, study na lang ko for my exams. (I would really
manage my time. If I have tasks to do for UPECS, I always make sure that all of
those are done already before I study. I have to finish all my tasks for UPECS
before going home so I could directly study for my exams when I arrive),” she
said.
However, she also mentioned that
her leadership to the scientific people is has become lighter and easier to
handle because of her co-officers who are supportive and cooperative. In order
to finish the tasks quickly and efficiently, she usually delegate the tasks to all
her members.
She admitted that the delegation
of tasks is not always easy. Sometimes, her co-officers refuse the tasks. But
according to her, she has to perform 2 things: one, ‘to persuade her member to
do the task for the betterment of their organization’, two, ‘to make it appear
to her member that she’s already burdened with the tasks and still she was not
helped by just getting some tasks that member could perform,’ she said
laughingly.
Fortunately, most of the time,
her members also do cooperate, she added. “All of them we’re willing to do the
tasks, it’s just that we’re bounded with time to do them.”
She also doesn't receive any
salary or benefit for being in the position. In fact, it even made her busier
with life, leaving no rooms for going out with friends.
“In order for us to go out and
have fun, we just usually decide to buy our stuff for our experiments,
together,” she said.
Things can sometimes go crazy
that you’ll be confused on what to do first and what’s next. Exams, Papers,
Reports and other academic stuff can make each student stressed.
“You have to know your goals, your priorities and yourself."
By doing so, you can always get motivation upon
looking back at your purpose of studying. Knowing oneself is also important
because if you know yourself, you would know where to focus more and study
more.
“Dili kay galisod pa ka ana nga subject, maglaag-laag na noon ka. Why not study more in that
subject. “
“Make the most of your time.
Prove to UP that you’re a UPian,” she firmly said.
