Golden Scions- for the Second Time Around

The Sciences cluster did it again.

The Golden Scions emerged as champions at the Cheerdance Competition held last August 27, first day of University of the Philippines Cebu Intramurals.
For this years competition, each team was assigned a particular Philippine festival hat they should portray in their performance.
Assigned to the Panagbenga festival, the Scions used colorful wings and flowers to go with their dance steps and stunts.
The Golden Scions cheerdance was headed by Rembrandt Cenit, Syrel Gin Fajardo, Evan James Tingcoy, Lorraine and Timothy Su. Enzo Campomanes, was the group’s choreographer.
They held try outs to those who want to join in cheer dance and started their practices on the first week of July.
More than three-fourths of dancers were first years.
“We have to discipline these hyperactive kids. Plus they have zero experience in Cheer dance, so we have to go all the way back the basics in how to do liftings and stuff, this actually took most of our time,” Rembrandt Cenit said.
‘Since they are just first years, their strengths are limited. That’s why their cheer dance was composed mostly of dances to cover up the stunts’, Cenit added.

Doubts on the results
After the announcement of winners, there were commotions of who should be the winner and questioned the judges’ decision.
‘After we danced, we felt that we would lose because there were many failed stunts. We didn’t expect that we will win. It was shocking’, said Nicole Sevilla, one of the cheer dancers.
‘We wondered why we won because we thought that the Management Tycoon’s routine was greater than us’, said Danya Perez, Scions’ intramurals head.
‘We were surprised and got slightly bitter because we really expected that we would win’, said Edrian Belongilot, a Tycoon cheer dancer.
To stop the issues, the participants were told that Scions’ excelled on festivity, relevance to the theme, which was 30 percent of the overall criteria, and the props used.
Another that added points on the Scions’ was the criteria that the cheer dance routine should encourage the audience to join sports, which was only complied by the Golden Scions when they shouted ‘join sports now’ in their routine.

Since the judges’ decisions were irrevocable and things were already explained, the people accepted the results and focused on the games and other competitions.
“We accepted it later on and thanked those who supported and believed [in] us,” said John Rhey Balmori, Tycoon cheer dancer.
The cheer dance competition was held during the first day of the intramurals, August 27, after the grand parade.
